A 24-hour trading day begins in the Asia-Pacific region, then moves to major centers in Europe and then to North America, where it ends with the U.S. trading session. These represent the U.S. dollar (USD) versus the Canadian dollar (CAD), the Euro (EUR) versus the USD, and the USD versus the Japanese Yen (JPY), respectively. The most profitable way to carry trades that benefit not only from a positive and growing yield, but that also have the potential to appreciate in value.

So, a trader anticipating a currency change could short or long one of the currencies in a pair and take advantage of the shift. Spreads and fees, while seemingly small, do add up and can significantly affect profitability, especially for frequent traders.
